Mastering Graphic Design: Essential Tips for Beginners

If you’re a graphic designer relatively new to the industry, here’s a quick guide to follow for creating exclusive and appealing graphics. Graphic Design is often discussed yet rarely understood.

What is Graphic Design?

Graphic Design is the elemental use of visual imagery to deliver a message to the audience. The person that practices Graphic design is called a Graphic Designer. Graphic Designers use photos, graphics, illustration, text and other design elements to convey the required message.

What do Graphic Designers work on?

The Graphic Design industry is booming with opportunities. Graphic designers are required everywhere, from small business, personal brands  to Multi National Corporations. Look at our student works here.

A Graphic designer has an array of fields to choose from, some of them are:

  • Brand Identity design
  • Marketing & Advertisement design
  • Packaging design
  • User interface and User experience design
  • Movie poster design
  • Print design
  • Publication design
  • Lettering design
  • Typography
  • Graphic Illustrations
  • Infographic Design

And so many more…

Being a Designer and an Artist

Being a designer is different from being an artist.

The core difference between a designer and an artist is that a designer designs specific to the audience delivering a specified message, contrastingly, artists create to self-express. An artist does not have a specific audience in mind.

This point strongly differentiates artists from designers.

Embrace White Space

White space is the empty space that surrounds the main elements on a canvas. It is also referred to as Negative Space. On the contrary, The visual space being occupied by design elements is called “Positive Space”.

The lack of Negative space in a design can lead to the viewer being confused. To lead and navigate better ideas, it’s crucial to practice a balanced composition of positive and negative space.

Contrasting Colors

Generally speaking, Contrast is a required element in the field of design. Contrast refers to the value difference between elements.Contrast can be created with various properties. It can be Size contrast, Color Contrast, Type Contrast etc.

It is important to navigate the attention of the viewers.

Keep it simple

Keeping it simple accounts to the concept of minimalism. Minimalism is the concept of using minimal elements to convey a broader idea. The biggest mistake we see amateur designers make is that they don’t practice simplicity in their designs. That leads to the design being over complicated and less appealing. We, at Frameboxx Animation Institute, encourage young designers to keep it simple. The simpler the design, the better it converts.

Incorporating Visual Icons

Icons act as a visual enhancement tool for graphics. It’s a little life hack that we use to incorporate visual imagery to uplift the designs.

Instead of writing “ GMAIL: shahi.fbxx@gmail.com

A much more graphic way will be to 📧: shahi.fbxx@gmail.com

Visual icons give your design a more sense of structure and also frees up space that can instead be used for something better.

Limit your typefaces

Sometimes, designers are not aware of typefaces and the way they communicate.

There are 2 types of Typefaces: Serif & Sans Serif.

Serif Fonts have an extra notch to them, that we call a “serif”. These are mostly used for print media design and also luxury packaging occasionally.Examples include: Times New Roman,Georgia etc.

Whereas, Sans-Serif fonts do not have a”serif” attached. These are mostly used for digital production, graphics etc. Common examples include: Arial, Montserrat etc.

It is recommended to use maximum 3-4 typefaces in a single design piece. Usage of more than 3-4 leads to messy and unclear designs. However, it is the designer’s choice to include variety in their typography from both typefaces.

Create a Color Palette

A color palette is what makes or breaks your design. What works and what does not work will mostly be dependent on your placement, composition and color palette.

Experts say a 4-5 color palette is the best choice for a design. A color palette can be diverse but not necessarily different. Choose good colors that go well and compliment each other well.

Learn more about accent colors, secondary colors etc. to enhance your design. To direct the eye, choose the accent color to create visual hierarchy. Use colors to direct and navigate your viewer’s attention.

Use Composition wisely

Good layouts also add to the overall aesthetic of the design. Use fundamental concepts like Rule of Thirds, Golden Ratio, Fibonacci Spiral to serve as a base for your placement.

It is a great way to enhance the way your design looks.

In conclusion, use these tips to skyrocket your growth from an amateur to an expert.
