These terminologies will also include a few common slang words by industry professionals.
We have segregated these terms in alphabetical order.
We have already covered alphabets from A to P in the consecutive blogs.
This blog will cover the rest of the letters continuing with,
Q : Qwerty Keyboard, Quad Draw Tool, QuarkXPress
R: Resolution, Raster, Render, Rule of Thirds
S : Size, Splash Screen, Symmetry
T : Transform, Typography, Tilt
U : Undo, UX/UI, Unity
V : Vector, Visual Hierarchy
W : Width, Wide angle shot
X : X-height, X-axis
Y : Y axis, Yard, Yoast SEO
Z: Z brush, Zoom, Z pattern
Qwerty Keyboard
Qwerty Keyboard is an arrangement of letters on the keyboard. This follows a Latin-Script alphabetical arrangement. The name comes from the order of the first six keys on the top letter row of the keyboard ( Q W E R T Y ). The QWERTY Keyboard was designed for typewriters so that frequently used letters were placed far apart to avoid clashing of letters and prevent misprinting.
Quad Draw Tool
The Quad Draw tool is a topic of discussion in 3D Modelling. The Quad Draw tool helps to manually model cleaner meshes often resulting in a good workflow and preserving the overall shape.
QuarkXpress
QuarkXpress is a Desktop Publishing Software used for creating complex page layouts often used in Magazine and text-based industries. This works in a WYSIWYG environment. WYSIWYG stands for “What you see is what you get”.
Resolution
Resolution refers to the number of pixels present in a raster-based image. The higher the number, the better the quality. Pixels are boxes of color that comprise an image. Resolution is measured in pixels per inch, abbreviated as PPI. A good number is 300 ppi, which in turn increases the file size too.
Raster
Graphic design is broadly classified into 2 types of formats: Raster and Vector. Raster is a file format made up of pixels whereas Vector is composed of Paths and mathematical operations. Raster-based images are to be edited in specific softwares such as Adobe Photoshop etc.
Render
Render is a word, commonly thrown around by creative teams. Render, essentially means to deliver the final output. This term can be heard mostly in Video Editing industry. To render a video means to deliver an output of the required resolution with specific details.
Rule of Thirds
Rule of Thirds is one of the most common and effective concepts for designing an appealing composition. The Rule of Thirds states that after dividing your canvas into equal thirds if you place your focal point on any of the intersecting corners, it is automatically perceived as a good composition by the human eye. This is a general assumption that can be noticed mostly everywhere.
Size
Size is the width and height of your element. Usually, when someone mentions the size to be 5 by 3 inches, it is a general assumption that the format adheres to “width by height”. As beginners, try not to get confused between the two.
Splash Screen
Splash Screen is a term used in the UI/UX Industry. A Splash Screen is the first introductory screen that appears when you launch a program. This can include a small animation or a logo appearance on the screen.
Symmetry
According to a forum, Symmetry is one of the most important principles of design. It has the power to create balance, harmony, and order in your compositions
Transform
Transform in the visual world refers to changing or distorting the element’s properties. Properties such as Scale, Rotation, Tilt, Distortion etc. can be manipulated using the transform feature.
Typography
The study of type is called Typography. It involves an extensive study of fonts, their hierarchy and importance in the graphic world.
Tilt
Tilt is the physical rotation of the camera vertically to create diagonal movement in the footage. It is commonly used in the photography and production industry.
Unity
Unity is the said collectiveness of the elements. How well the elements compliment each other is equally important in the design. Unity usually occurs when all the various elements of a design coexist to form an experience that is pleasing to the viewer.
Unity adds to the piece and makes it feel more alive and coherent. It is necessary when you are building a piece that involves symmetry.
Symmetry and unity go hand-in-hand in the visual world. The union of elements invokes a feeling of balance and stability to the viewer making the experience more mindful. This unity can be created visually and conceptually.
Undo:
The most practised feature in every design software is Undo. The undo feature is a boon to all users. This allows us to un-do the last action and re-do it. Undo means to reverse the last action that has been performed. It is also performed by a generalised shortcut, Ctrl+Z.
UI/UX
UI stands for “User Interface”. User Interface is designing the visual platform where the user will be interacting with a service for the time. UI refers to the visual elements like Buttons, Icons, and Toggles that you interact with on a website. It is required to design a User Interface with utmost importance because it is directly linked to how the client/user perceives a brand.
User Experience refers to the total interaction that you’ve had with the website, and/or what you feel about the product. UI and UX are the pillars of any digital product.
Vector Graphics
Generally, Graphics design is broadly classified into 2 types of formats: Raster and Vector. Vector file format is composed of Paths and mathematical operations. It has the unique property of being infinitely scalable and zoomable. This versatile property makes vectors best for logos, standees, banners etc.
Visual Hierarchy
It is about categorizing information into chunks. Based on importance, the viewer will identify the key information in your overall design. This plays a vital role in Design. In most web designs, there will be a logo on the top, a main headline, and a subheading to support the information cycle. It is because all these pages follow the fundamental rule of hierarchy.
Width
Width is the horizontal length of an asset. It is measured along the X-axis. When describing a particular size to someone, it is important to mention the width first and then height.
Wide angle shot
This term is mostly used in the Production and Pre-Production industries. Shots are key frames designed to depict an important movement in the scene. The placement of camera plays a vital role. A wide angle shot is abbreviated as (WA) in storyboarding. It covers the subject and a good chunk of information from the surroundings as well.
X-height
X- height is the distance between the baseline and the mean line of lowercase letters in a typeface. The letters you are watching right now, all these letters have a designated height referred as X-height.
X- Axis
The x-axis is the horizontal plane of a graph in a Cartesian coordinate system. This plane system is followed in all areas that incorporate measurement.
Y axis
A y-axis is the vertical axis on the Cartesian coordinate plane. The y-axis starts at negative infinity and increases to positive infinity. The y-axis is also the starting, or 0 point, for measuring how far a point extends horizontally on a graph.
Yard
According to Wikipedia, The yard is an English unit of length in both the British imperial and US customary systems of measurement equalling 3 feet or 36 inches. This is used when designing large banners or hoardings on a large scale.
Yoast SEO
Yoast SEO is a well-known tool in the Web Design Industry. Yoast SEO is a search engine optimization (SEO) tool plug-in for WordPress. WordPress is an open-source, standalone project that was created back in 2003.
It is an open-source software, which hosts more than 40% of all websites hosted on the web. It is a web content management system. In its early days, it was used to publish blogs and has extended its popularity to support publishing other web content, including more traditional websites, mailing lists, and even online stores.
Z brush
ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that combines 3D/2.5D modelling, texturing and painting. It uses a proprietary “pixol” technology which stores lighting, colour, material, orientation and depth information for the points making up all objects on the screen.
ZBrush has been developed by Pixologic. It is one of the best softwares for digital sculpting.Check out more our student work here(https://frameboxxahmedabad.artstation.com/)
Zoom
Zooming is the feature of a camera shot that changes smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa. This gives us a better view of the details in our composition and an overview as well. Zooming can be done with a scroll wheel as well as through the zoom tool commonly found by the shortcut “Z”.
Z pattern
Z-pattern is a technique figured out in the eye tracking movement. When a user is observing a graphic, 2 types of movements can be seen, The F-pattern and the Z-pattern. The Z pattern is commonly observed in landing page design and even reading.
This Z-Pattern is a great technique to create visual hierarchy and interest in the overall design.
