Introduction

Are you an enthusiastic being about everything “filmistic”?

Do you find yourself enjoying the Behind-the-scenes of every great movie?

Do you wonder how cinematographers come up with such creative compositions, how did the top-tier screenwriters come up with such a great script for the film?

If this resonates with you, You’re at the right place.

Animation is one of the booming- industries of today’s time. As a matter of fact, The global animation industry accounted for about USD 394.6 billion in the year 2022. Animation is the process of creating the illusion of motion using still images. These still images are then stacked and tracked on another parameter called time. This creates an illusion of motion and thus, an animated video is formed.

Every industry goes hand in hand creatively. Storytelling is the backbone of the entertainment industry regardless of various mediums. The mediums of storytelling can completely alter the way it is perceived. A designated style and colour grading are required to present the piece to its target audience.

Film Design is the collaborative result of various elements in action. From the screenplay to the storyboards, from storyboards to production, from production to post-production effects, the final product you see on screen is not a mere chance of encounter, it is these strategic decisions that reflect the hard work.

Storytelling is an important skill every creative individual must possess. The way a story is being presented plays a crucial role in the way it will be perceived. Film Design refers to the organisation and creation of various visual aspects of a film, be it motion films, television shows, web series or short movies.

India has a graceful history in animation. We all have seen shadow-puppet traditional animations to convey stories. Our Indian culture is rich in stories and methods of conveying them.

Look at our most loved Indian Animations, like Chhota Bheem, Motu Patlu, Chaar Sahibzaade and Hanuman shows. These shows have been created in India, quite ahead of their time.

Every kid in Indian Households loves Motu Patlu, Chhota Bheem or Hanuman cartoons. 2D Animation has beautifully become a way of educating kids and expanding their knowledge of various cultures.
We feel so proud to say that RAM MOHAN, an Indian Animator and title designer is known as the “Father of Indian Animation”. The process of writing a story is called story writing. This process involves a lot of technical steps, edits and changes to be made to finally convert it into a final piece.

I’m sure you must have a mind-boggling idea in your head, a story that could move hearts, a story that looks like a gem never heard of before. And you might go ahead and start writing it down, but, plot twist, things don’t go how you thought they’d go like.

This is where a step-by-step guide will come in handy and get the crazy ideas out of your head.

So, if you want to write your script, hold on for a while and relax.

A written script for a story is called a screenplay in the cinematic language. A screenplay is a defining step for your overall story. How the story reacts and responds will be heavily dependent on your screenplay.

Now, a movie script will be containing all the parts – audio design, scene design, visuals, behaviour, dialogue delivery, expressions, setting, environment, lighting, you name it.

A story writer will constantly be in to and fro with the production managers, producers, directors and even actors at times. This gives a wider range of perspectives and invites constructive criticism to improve the story and the delivery.

Taking into consideration that films and TV shows require a multimedium format – meaning, it contains an audio and a video aspect of a story, as a budding story writer you will need to take both of the sides at equal par. Your job is to translate all the visual and audio parts of the story into words, being an indispensable translator between the two worlds.

Note that, You are a visual storyteller. Your primary job is to SHOW the audience the story, and not just Tell it. As you practice this fundamental, you’ll soon be on your way to writing som great stories.

Treatment Script

When an overall script of the story has been written, another copy of the script is rewritten called the Treatment Script. This Treatment script is a detailed summary of the most important events happening in your story. Now, this is the script that will go through the pipeline.

The Treatment script is then sent to the Pre-Production Department to create visuals for the story. This is where the composition, lighting, mood and character designs come into play.

As a budding story writer, you need to understand that not all scenes of the story hold equal importance, at some point in your journey, you will need to filter out the most important scenes in your story. This will create a visual hierarchy and interest in your story.
